We’re going to continue with our series of answering purchasing questions from readers that we feel might be relevant for a lot of people out there in comparable situations. During our last live stream, we brainstormed with parents on The Stroller Workshop about three-wheeled strollers. This time around will be similar in that regard but instead of focusing solely upon the three-wheeled models.
To find the best stroller for parents living in towns with cobblestones, limited trunk space, and a desire to use their child’s mobility as much as possible while still being able to take them hiking on bumpier trails. We compared four different models; each one suited certain needs but there are many considerations that need making before choosing such as weight distribution or style.
Table of Contents
I’ll be taking a look at four different models today: the Bugaboo Runner, City Elite 2, Thule Urban Glide 2, and the Mountain Buggy Urban Jungle.
Each one of these strollers has its own pros & cons which make them perfect for certain situations but not others so it’s important to know exactly what you want before buying.
But before I get started though, as it says in the last article if after reading this you’d like to see more content of its sort covering other specific sets or models related specifically to a certain set of life factors please leave your thoughts down below.
City Elite 2
No products found.
The City Elite 2 Stroller is a great option for parents who want to take their baby on hikes with them. The smaller 12-inch wheels can handle hilly terrain, but it won’t be as smooth riding compared to the Bugaboo Runner’s 16″ solid rubber tires and pneumatic air-filled onesies that help reduce shock absorption when hitting road bumps or cracks in sidewalks. It’s a good thing that this stroller has foam-filled tires instead of air ones because it means there won’t be any punctures. However, you will have to put up with less shock absorption when riding on rough terrain.
The City Elite 2 has a more complex chassis which may not be suitable for those who want something lightweight and easy to carry around.
While the weakness of this product is very apparent when compared to other models on the market, if hiking will be a big part of your everyday routine then I would recommend something different.
The City Elite 2 Stroller has a fully flat recline and independently adjustable leg rests. In comparison to other models here today, it’s not just the largest but also features an extra long seat for your child that can be fully laid down in comfy comfort. With a compact design and lightweight frame, this stroller is one of the most portable models on our list. This product’s folding capabilities allow it to easily fit into smaller cars or trunks without having any parts pulled apart from each other which makes traveling with your child easier than ever before.
Thule Urban Glide 2
- A lightweight, all-terrain stroller perfect for jogging or strolling through town
- Voted Best Jogging Stroller of 2023 by Women’s Health
- Swivel front wheel locks into place for jogging and running
- Large 16″ rear wheels with suspension provide an ultra-smooth ride
- One-handed, compact fold makes storage and transport easy
The Thule Urban Glide 2 stroller is perfect for parents on the go. It features 16-inch wheels in the back with a 12″ swivel wheel up front, like in the City Elite 2, making it easy to navigate any terrain without the worry of getting stuck or losing movement.
The large, rubberized rear wheels provide a smooth ride with shock absorption that is roughly equivalent to what you would experience on a track. When it comes to navigating through rough terrain, this model will be your best friend. The smaller swivel wheel makes for easier steering and won’t affect the ability to get over mein stones or other similar-sized obstacles in riversides. This model is the best of these four models.
If you’re looking for a comfortable hiking experience with your children, then the Glide is not an option. It has a bit shorter seat length compared to any model we tested – meaning it’s a bit more uncomfortable to sit than in the Runner, for example. The most sloped in its upright position, this stroller can be a bit annoying on its own. But with the use of a padded seat insert, it becomes more manageable and easy to push around town. The Thule Urban Glide 2 is a bit on the long side when folded down and requires you to remove the rear wheels in order for it to fit into most trunks.
Mountain Buggy Urban Jungle
No products found.
The Mountain Buggy Urban Jungle is one of the most versatile strollers on this list, but I don’t recommend buying a new one. The hand-mounted static break introduced in 2015 is a very flawed design. I’ve found that it easily breaks and renders the model useless unless you replace these affected elements with an equally poorly made component. However, if you are looking for an affordable and reliable stroller that can handle hiking conditions on the same level as City Elite then I would recommend checking out used urban jungle models. These older foot brake-equipped ones have stronger shock absorption abilities which make them more stable when going over uneven terrain or stones while also being simpler than newer designs.
The Urban Jungle has an intermediate seat size somewhere between the Glide and Elite, but it’s more boat-like than either of them due to its longer folded profile. Despite the small size of this stroller, you may still need to remove the rear wheel in order for it to fit into your trunk.
The Bugaboo Runner
The Bugaboo Runner is the perfect choice for navigating through cobblestone streets and rugged terrain. It’s equipped with 16-inch rear wheels, which provide traction on uneven surfaces; 14 front one makes sure you grip tight when taking corners or applying pressure in slippery conditions.
The front wheel on a stroller is fixed and cannot turn in order to navigate around obstacles. This makes jogging difficult, but it can be useful when walking outside city limits or hiking up steep hills because you don’t need to worry about pushing the entire weight of your baby plus all its equipment uphill. The reversible seat is what sets this model apart from the rest, making it a great choice for parents that want their children to feel comfortable no matter which direction they’re facing when riding. With the shortest seat or seats as it can be paired with a variety of Bugaboo models, this stroller allows for easy folding and unfolds quickly at your fingertips.
The Bugaboo Runner stroller can be a bit of an elephant in the room when it comes to folded size unless you remove the wheels and seat before packing it away, which is then again time-consuming as well as potentially yucky depending on where your hike took place.
As a last note, the Runner’s been off the market for some time now, meaning one would probably need to buy it secondhand. And if you’re interested in going this route, note that you’ll also need to hunt down the correct adapters for whichever seat you plan to use the model with.
If you’re looking to buy a used stroller, I highly recommend checking out some tutorials on how they work and what features should be considered. Look especially for ones that detail fixing up this type of model when buying it secondhand; there are many problems with these babies after all.
